If you depend on someone else to develop the site for you, you may get lost in the discussion. The terms are easy enough to understand once you are familiarized with them.

Here is a simple list of basic terms related to web hosting and their simple definitions:

Web hosting – this is a service which provides a place for a website. This makes it easier for them to get discovered on the World Wide Web or www. They also have a server with unlimited space which their clients can freely use depending on their needs.

World Wide Web – a.k.a. www or Web is a system where documents can be previewed over the internet. These are easily accessed once the search is made on a web browser.

File Transfer Protocol – this is a standard where a file name can be copied from one web host and can be accessed by another web host. This way, all data can be accessed over the Internet even with differing web hosts or search engines.

Colocation – the web hosts can transfer data from their space and connect it to other web hosts and their servers. However, the transfer does not mean that the next host will own the data. Only the original host can own it.

Domain name – the website needs a name, a domain name which will be owned by the one who created it. They are easily identifiable with .com, .net, .ph, .info, etc.
Registrars – the domain names have to be registered so they become owned. If and when it is done it can be sold to others interested in the name.
