Web Hosting 101- Getting to Know the Basics

By definition, web hosting is a service on the Internet. It ‘hosts’ or allows some people or companies to make their own websites more accessible to the rest of the world. This is needed if there is a demand to increase traffic within the website and to make sure that the search engines could find the website and its contents.

The web hosts are companies which provide a space on their server which can be leased to their clients who register their websites there. This will guarantee that the websites can be linked to the Internet. These companies also provide information on their spaces and make the websites get connected to other servers which they do not own. This is called co-location.

The hosting covers a lot of things and they depend on the needs of each website. Basically, there is a web page and file hosting in small scales. These files can be uploaded using the FTP or the File Transfer Protocol. This can also be done through a Web interface.

The files are received by the Web either edited and processed or raw. There are many ISPs or Internet Service Providers that can do the tweaking if they are needed and this does not cost anything at all.

Web page hosting can be also done between people. This is usually free, has advertisers for sponsors or it can be cheaper if there is actually a fee. For business however, the expense can be a little higher.

There are some web hosts that can provide certain specialized software or services for e-commerce. These are generally used by big companies or multinationals that needs to outsource their business to a web host thus increasing their sales and traffic as well.

There are single page hosting which is great for personal websites, but if it is for a company or a big business involving several services to the loyal customers, then they should use a lot of pages, options, email services etc.
